The Delhi High Court has suspended Rajpal Yadav’s sentence in his cheque bounce case, clearing the way for his release from jail. The relief comes after the Court granted interim suspension of sentence subject to compliance with its conditions.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Monday gave a major relief window to Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav in his cheque bounce case. The Court granted time till 3 PM to his lawyer to submit a demand draft (DD) of Rs 1.5 crore in the name of the respondent for interim bail.

The Court cautioned that any lapse in complying with its order could result in adverse consequences. By stating,

“Interim suspension of sentence in the net date of hearing… You [Yadav] should be present in the court or remain present on VC (video conferencing). We do not want any discrepancy,”

the Bench underlined the importance of procedural discipline and timely compliance in granting such relief.

The Court clearly stated that if the DD is deposited by 3 PM today, Yadav will be released from jail. However, if the amount is not deposited within the given time, the matter will be heard again tomorrow morning.

This development comes after Rajpal Yadav surrendered before the authorities at Tihar Jail on February 5 to serve his sentence.

Earlier in the day, actor Sonu Sood publicly supported Rajpal Yadav through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Expressing his concern and hope, Sonu wrote,

“Today is an important day for our brother Rajpal Yadav bhai. Praying that things move in the right direction and he gets the relief he deserves,”

Sonu Sood wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

He further praised Yadav and said,

“He’s a rare talent and a wonderful soul. Let’s not let the momentum die; we stand with him and will keep going till things are right.”

Rajpal Yadav is currently in jail in connection with a cheque bounce case related to a financial dispute of Rs 9 crore. The case goes back to 2010 when the actor took a loan of Rs 5 crore to finance his directorial debut film, Ata Pata Laapata.

He had assured the lender of returns from the project. However, the film did not perform well at the box office, and Yadav suffered heavy financial losses. Over time, the unpaid amount increased to Rs 9 crore.

According to court records, several cheques issued by Yadav towards repayment were dishonoured due to insufficient funds. As a result, the production house filed a complaint against him in 2018. A magistrate’s court later convicted him under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which deals with cheque dishonour cases, and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment.

After the conviction, Yadav and his wife approached the Delhi High Court. In 2024, the High Court suspended his sentence and granted him time to repay the outstanding amount.

However, in February this year, the Court refused to grant any further extension for payment. Following this order, the actor surrendered before Tihar Jail authorities.

Before going to jail, Rajpal Yadav had stated that he was facing serious financial difficulties. He claimed that he had no money and was not receiving support from the film industry, saying that he was handling the situation alone.

On the professional front, the 54-year-old actor is expected to appear in upcoming films Bhoot Bangla and Welcome To The Jungle. He was last seen in the 2024 film Baby John.

The High Court’s decision to grant time till 3 PM for depositing Rs 1.5 crore now becomes crucial for Rajpal Yadav’s immediate release. All eyes are on whether the amount will be submitted within the deadline, which will determine if he walks out of jail today or continues to remain in custody until further hearing.
