The BJP criticised Rahul Gandhi for not attending Justice Surya Kant’s oath-taking as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, calling it an insult to constitutional values. The party said his absence reflected “disrespect” towards Ambedkar and the ‘samvidhan’.

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday strongly criticised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for not being present at the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Surya Kant, who has taken charge as the 53rd Chief Justice of India.
The BJP said that his absence showed clear “disrespect” towards B R Ambedkar and the Constitution, and questioned his commitment to important constitutional events.

According to the BJP, the oath-taking ceremony was a significant national occasion as it marked the formal appointment of the new Chief Justice of India, a position that plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and the Constitution.
Senior leaders and top authorities of the country were present at the ceremony, but Rahul Gandhi did not attend, which the BJP claimed was not appropriate for someone holding the post of Leader of Opposition.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress leader of deliberately avoiding the event and said he was “skipping and boycotting” a key constitutional function.
He argued that such behaviour sends a wrong message to the public and weakens respect for democratic institutions.

Justice Surya Kant took oath in Hindi, in the name of God, and officially assumed office as the Chief Justice of India.
He succeeds Justice B R Gavai and will remain in office until February 9, 2027. His tenure is expected to last for nearly 15 months, during which he will head the Supreme Court and oversee several important legal and constitutional matters.
Shehzad Poonawalla further alleged that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party prioritise family-based politics over democratic values. He stated that their actions reflect a mindset where personal and family interests are placed above constitutional duties.
He added,
“It shows that his family, particularly him, talk about ‘samvidhan’, but they don’t respect Ambedkar and ‘samvidhan’.”
The BJP reiterated that attending such ceremonies is not merely symbolic but represents respect for the Constitution, the judiciary, and the system designed by Dr B R Ambedkar.

The party stressed that leaders must show responsibility and uphold constitutional traditions, especially when the country is witnessing the swearing-in of its highest judicial authority.
This incident has once again highlighted the ongoing political tension between the BJP and the Congress, with both parties using the event to question each other’s commitment to constitutional values, governance, and democratic principles.
