Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw told a Mumbai court that Sapna Gill’s plea against him is “false, frivolous, vexatious” and filed to malign his image and gain publicity. Shaw claimed the complaint is a counterblast to the 2023 FIR against Gill following a pub brawl incident.

Mumbai: Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw has told a Mumbai court that the complaint filed against him by social media influencer Sapna Gill in an alleged molestation case is false and baseless. In his written reply submitted on Tuesday, Shaw said the case was filed only to damage his reputation and to get publicity.

Shaw claimed that Gill was using the “womanhood card” to settle a “personal vendetta” against him. He said this was because of an earlier incident in 2023, when a case was registered against Gill after a fight at a pub.

The dispute dates back to February 2023, when Gill was arrested for allegedly attacking Prithvi Shaw following an argument over taking selfies at a hotel in Mumbai’s suburbs. After she was released on bail, Gill approached the Airport police station in Andheri and filed a complaint against Shaw, his friend Ashish Yadav, and others.

She accused them of molestation and outraging her modesty. However, the police did not register a First Information Report (FIR) in the matter.

After this, Gill moved a magistrate’s court and asked for directions to the police to register an FIR. The magistrate then ordered a preliminary inquiry under Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. This type of inquiry is done to check whether there are enough grounds to proceed with a criminal case.

Following the inquiry, the police submitted a report stating that no offence was made out against Prithvi Shaw or his friends.

Not satisfied with this finding, Gill filed a revision petition before a sessions court in April 2024 through her lawyer, Ali Kaashif Khan.

Shaw, who had not responded earlier, finally filed his reply on Tuesday. In his response, he alleged that Gill was

“playing the womanhood card with sole intention to settle the personal vendetta as counterblast”

to the FIR that had been registered against her earlier.

In his reply, Shaw further stated,

“The present criminal revision application is false, frivolous, vexatious and filed with the sole intention to malign, defame and harass the respondent by misusing his public image and celebrity status,”.

The cricketer also claimed that “Gill is a struggling actor”, and alleged that she had approached the court “with sole intention to gain publicity” and to “extort handsomely” from him by falsely implicating him in a criminal case.

The court has now listed the matter for further hearing on March 31.

Reacting to Shaw’s reply, Gill’s lawyer said that the response does not deal with the facts of the case. He stated that Shaw’s reply does not contain a

“single iota of evidence or alibi in support of his case”.
