Advocate Karan Umesh Salvi has been appointed as a consultant to assist the panel probing the allegations. The investigation follows the discovery of cash at Justice Yashwant Varma’s residence, aiming to examine grounds for his possible removal from the Allahabad High Court.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat officially appointed Advocate Sh. Karan Umesh Salvi as a Consultant on a temporary basis to assist the Judges (Inquiry) Committee. The Committee is tasked with investigating the grounds on which the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court is sought.
Earlier, On August 12, the Speaker began the impeachment process for Justice Varma, who serves as a High Court judge. A committee was established to investigate the finding of cash at Justice Varma’s official residence.
The order, dated 17th October 2025, states,
“The Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha is pleased to engage Sh. Karan Umesh Salvi, Advocate as Consultant to assist the Committee constituted under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, for the purpose of making an investigation into the grounds on which the removal of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court is sought.”
The appointment will be effective from 17th October 2025 and will continue co-terminus with the tenure of the Committee or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Regarding the financial arrangements, the order mentions,
“The necessary expenditure involved in this regard may be initially processed from the Suspense Account of P&AO, Lok Sabha Secretariat and subsequently be reimbursed by raising a debit against the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India.”
The terms and conditions of Karan Umesh Salvi’s engagement have been attached as an annexure to the official order issued by Deputy Secretary Savdha Kalia of the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
This appointment is seen as a crucial step in ensuring a fair and thorough investigation by the Judges (Inquiry) Committee under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, reflecting the Indian Parliament’s commitment to transparency and judicial accountability.
A fire broke out at Justice Varma’s home on the evening of March 14, during which unaccounted cash was inadvertently found by firefighters.
A video depicting the recovery of the burnt cash was reportedly shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the High Court.
At the time of the incident, Justice Varma and his wife were traveling in Madhya Pradesh, leaving only their daughter and elderly mother at home. On March 21, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an internal investigation into the allegations, appointing a three-member committee to carry out the inquiry.
The Supreme Court had previously formed an internal panel that found the judge guilty and suggested his removal.
Additionally, The Central Government announced the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court back to his original position at the Allahabad High Court.
This decision followed a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium made on March 24.
Additionally, The Supreme Court of India directed the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court not to assign any judicial responsibilities to Justice Yashwant Varma.
