A controversy erupted after cash was allegedly recovered from the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma. Senior Advocate Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, has weighed in on the matter. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court-appointed In-House Committee will recommend a police or CBI investigation. Aggarwala emphasized the importance of a transparent probe to uphold judicial integrity.

Senior Advocate Dr. Adish C. Aggarwala, Chairman of the All India Bar Association and former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, has released a statement regarding the recent incident involving the alleged burning of currency notes at Justice Yashwant Verma’s outhouse.
Dr. Aggarwala expressed his confidence that the three-judge In-House Committee appointed by the Supreme Court will recommend referring the matter to the Delhi Police or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In his statement, he emphasized the limitations of the In-House Committee concerning the criminal aspects of the case.
He noted that the Committee is not sufficiently equipped to investigate how the currency notes were planted or introduced into Justice Verma’s outhouse.
Furthermore, the Committee lacks the authority to record witness statements under Sections 180 BNSS and 183 BNSS, which significantly restricts its ability to conduct a thorough inquiry.
Dr. Aggarwala remarked,
“It cannot render a conclusive finding regarding the criminal intent or source of the currency notes. The Committee members, too, may be reluctant to be witnesses in any future criminal investigation.”
Meanwhile, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association (HCBA), which has opposed the transfer of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Verma to the Allahabad High Court, has decided to temporarily suspend their strike.
This decision is made as the association awaits the outcome of the in-house inquiry against the judge.
According to a resolution passed, the lawyers agreed to halt their strike until the three-judge inquiry committee completes its investigation into Justice Verma and the unaccounted cash discovered at his residence by firefighters on March 14.
Earlier, The Chief Justice of India (CJI) launched an internal investigation into the allegations and established a three-member committee to oversee the inquiry.
Justice Varma’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court was officially announced by the Central government following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium on March 24.
Additionally, The Supreme Court of India directed the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court not to assign any judicial responsibilities to Justice Yashwant Varma.
