The Central government has appointed Justice M Sundar, senior judge of the Madras High Court, as the next Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. He will take charge after Justice Kempaiah Somashekar’s retirement on September 14, 2025.
The Central government has appointed Justice M Sundar as the next Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. The official order was issued on September 13, 2025.
He will take charge of the office after September 14, 2025, when the present Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, retires from service.

At present, Justice Sundar is serving as the second senior-most judge of the Madras High Court. His name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 11, which endorsed him for the post of Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.
The Central government has now cleared this recommendation, paving the way for his elevation.
Justice Sundar will be the latest in a line of judges from the Madras High Court who have gone on to head the Manipur High Court.
Earlier, Justices Ramalingam Sudhakar, MV Muralidharan, and D Krishna Kumar also served as Chief Justices there.
Justice M Sundar was born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai. He studied law at Madras Law College, where he was part of the institution’s very first batch of the five-year integrated law course.
After completing his graduation in law, he enrolled as an advocate in 1989. He practiced mainly before the Madras High Court, dealing with a wide range of civil cases and building a strong reputation in the legal field.
In October 2016, he was elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court. Since then, Justice Sundar has authored several important and widely cited judgments, making significant contributions to the development of the law.

With his appointment, the Manipur High Court will get a new head at a time when the judiciary in the state continues to play a crucial role in upholding justice, ensuring accountability, and handling sensitive legal matters.
Justice Sundar’s background in civil law and his long years of service at the Madras High Court are expected to bring valuable judicial experience to Manipur.
