“When a Towering Tree of Justice Steps Back, the Winds Move Differently”: Justice Khanna on CJI Chandrachud’s Farewell

At a farewell event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Khanna paid tribute to his distinguished qualities as both a scholar and a jurist. Describing Chandrachud as a “towering tree” in the judiciary, he emphasized his calm and composed demeanor, both inside the courtroom and beyond. Justice Khanna highlighted the CJI’s intellectual depth, integrity, and dedication to justice, acknowledging the profound impact of his leadership on the judiciary.

In an emotional farewell speech on Friday, Chief Justice of India-designate Sanjiv Khanna expressed deep admiration for CJI D.Y. Chandrachud, remarking,

“When a towering tree of justice steps back, the winds move differently.”

Reflecting on Chandrachud’s profound influence, Justice Khanna added,

“The forest will never be quite the same again.”

He noted that starting Monday,

“An emptiness will resonate through the sandstone pillars of this court, a quiet echo within the hearts of the bar and bench alike.”

At a farewell event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna highlighted Chandrachud’s exceptional qualities as both a scholar and a jurist, noting that he is “calm and composed both in court and in life.”

Reflecting on Chandrachud’s impactful tenure, he remarked,

“Thirty-eight constitutional bench judgments, including two just today. This is a record that will remain unbroken.”

Attorney General R. Venkatramani praised Chief Justice Chandrachud’s commitment to humanizing the judiciary, mentioning initiatives such as allowing female clerks to work from home, providing crèche facilities, and introducing other workforce-friendly policies.

These meaningful gestures, Venkatramani stated, will leave a lasting legacy.

In a moving tribute, Senior Advocate and SCBA President Kapil Sibal lauded Chandrachud’s leadership and readiness to confront critical issues before the Supreme Court, adding,

“While there may be differences, the respect for his openness and dedication is unwavering.”

Kapil Sibal, Senior Advocate and SCBA President, expressed admiration for CJI Chandrachud’s readiness to address challenging issues, remarking,

“We may not agree with you; it’s not necessary to agree, but we must salute you for being willing to hear those issues.”

Reflecting on Chandrachud’s contributions, Sibal highlighted that his legacy would endure not only for his achievements but also for his thoughtful approach to complex matters, saying,

“You will be remembered for what you have done and what you have not done.”

Chief Justice Chandrachud began his term on November 8, 2022, following Uday Umesh Lalit, who served as the 49th CJI from August 27, 2022, to November 8, 2022.
