New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) held a farewell ceremony to honor Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dr. DY Chandrachud, who is set to retire on November 10.

Appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022, Justice Chandrachud’s tenure has been distinguished by pivotal judgments and a strong commitment to constitutional principles.

SCBA President and senior advocate Kapil Sibal delivered a heartfelt tribute, reflecting on Justice Chandrachud’s legacy and contributions.

Sibal opened his speech by contemplating the standards by which a judge’s career should be assessed, noting,

“When you have to judge the journey of any judge, what is the benchmark? Perfection and truth are relative. You have to judge on the basis of the times in which we live.”

Kapil Sibal commended Justice Chandrachud for surpassing the formidable legacy of his father, Justice YV Chandrachud, who served as Chief Justice of India for an unprecedented seven years and 14 days.

Sibal remarked, acknowledging Justice Chandrachud’s dedication to upholding life, liberty, and equality under the law.

“You outpaced him, judge,”

Sibal highlighted key aspects of Justice Chandrachud’s approach to jurisprudence, particularly his fearless handling of complex issues and steadfast commitment to fundamental rights. “Life and liberty are the most important attributes of a person. Nobody can be deprived, except in accordance with law. You will be remembered for your commitment to these principles and for furthering the cause of equality,” he said.

Describing Justice Chandrachud as a pioneer in disability rights and an advocate of open dialogue, Sibal praised his acceptance of criticism.

Sibal remarked, highlighting the inclusivity and courage that defined his tenure,

“You allowed people to criticize you. What can be braver than that?”

Reflecting on the judiciary’s broader legacy, Sibal added,

“The court is remembered by the work that judges do to fulfill constitutional duties. Legacy of any judge is measured by how they have sought to safeguard citizens’ rights. In that regard, it is beyond doubt that the CJI rendered phenomenal judgments.”

Ending his tribute on a personal note, Kapil Sibal recited a poem he had penned in honor of the departing Chief Justice, capturing the deep respect and admiration felt within the legal community.

Justice Chandrachud’s tenure, characterized by bold judgments and a progressive vision, has left a lasting impact on India’s judiciary. As he prepares to step down, the legal fraternity warmly bids him farewell, celebrating his dedication to the nation and the Constitution.
