The Government of India, through the Ministry of Law and Justice, had officially announced Justice Upadhyaya’s appointment as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court last week. He will be succeeding Justice Vibhu Bakhru, who is currently serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

New Delhi, January 21, 2025 – Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya will be sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court today. The ceremony will take place at 5:00 PM at Raj Niwas, Civil Lines, Delhi. It will be attended by key government officials, sitting judges, legal professionals, and other dignitaries.

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya‘s legal career spans several decades. He completed his law degree from Lucknow University in 1991 and began his legal practice at the Allahabad High Court. He was enrolled as an advocate on May 11, 1991, and focused primarily on civil and constitutional law cases.
On November 21, 2011, Justice Upadhyaya was appointed as an additional judge at the Allahabad High Court, and he became a permanent judge on August 6, 2013. His judicial journey took another step forward when he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on July 29, 2023.
On January 7, 2025, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended the transfer of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya from his position as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. Following this recommendation, the President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, issued the notification for his transfer.

The notification stated, “In the exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.”
