The Centre has notified the appointment of Justice PB Bajanthri as the new Chief Justice of Patna High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name for the position earlier on September 11, 2025.

The Ministry of Law and Justice announced the appointment of Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa Bajanthri as the new Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
His appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 11, 2025, alongside two other judges for different High Courts.
The notification published on the Ministry’s website read,
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1 ) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Pavankumar Bhimappa Bajanthri, Judge of the Patna High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Patna High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
Justice Bajanthri is presently the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, following the promotion of the former Chief Justice, Justice Vipul Pancholi, to the Supreme Court of India.
He began his legal career as an advocate in 1990, practicing before the High Court of Karnataka and various tribunals. From 1993 to 1994, he served as standing counsel for the Karnataka Public Service Commission.
Justice Bajanthri was appointed as an additional judge of the Karnataka High Court on January 1, 2015. He later transferred to the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, where he took his oath as a judge on March 16, 2015.
On November 17, 2018, he returned to the Karnataka High Court and was subsequently transferred to the Patna High Court on October 20, 2021.
