The coordination committee of three Patna High Court bar associations announced a May 15 work abstention, citing escalating tensions in court. It alleged that conduct of some “judges towards advocates has become abusive, insulting and hitting below the belt,” creating serious concern.

The coordination committee of three Patna High Court bar associations announced that lawyers will abstain from work on May 15, after raising serious concerns about the behaviour of some judges inside the courtroom.

The committee alleged that the conduct of certain “judges towards advocates has become abusive, insulting and hitting below the belt.”

According to the committee, the situation has reached a point where even senior members of the bar are hesitant to appear before a few judges due to the tense courtroom environment.

This decision came after the Co-ordination Committee met urgently to discuss a notice dated May 7, 2026, issued under the signature of the Registrar General in charge.

In its strong reaction to the notice, the committee said,

“The Co-ordination Committee met in extra ordinary situation which has reason due to notice. 3 dated 7 May 2026 issued under the signature of R.G.-in-charge. The Members of Co-ordination Committee unanimous and unequivocally resent and express there anguish against such notice.”

The committee further pointed out that relations between the bar and the bench have deteriorated lately.

It recorded its concerns in clear terms, stating,

“ That Bar of Patna High Court of late has felt that there is a growing rift between the bar and Bench. The behavior of Judges with lawyers in Court Proceeding to say the least are uncharitable, uncouth often abusive insulting and hitting below the belt. The Proceeding in many Courts are such that it appears that the Judges are a respiratory of all knowledge as to law and otherwise. What to talk of young members even Senior Members are often afraid to appear before certain Judges.”

It added that lawyers felt the Registrar General’s notice itself reflected an attitude that hurt the dignity of the bar.

The committee recorded,

“ The members of Bar see the aforesaid notification as a reflection of their feelings towards the bar. The co-ordination committee unanimously resolve that the members of the Bar are requested to abstain from their the professional duties on 11.5.2026 from 10.30 am onwards.”

With this resolution, the bar associations have made it clear that they view the matter as a serious institutional issue affecting working conditions inside the Patna High Court.

Their decision to abstain from work is meant as a collective expression of protest and concern over the present courtroom atmosphere, which they say is discouraging even experienced lawyers from appearing freely before certain judges.
