India’s Laws Must Evolve with Technological Changes to Remain Credible and Effective: Justice Tejas Karia of Delhi High Court

NEW DELHI: Justice Tejas Karia of the Delhi High Court on Saturday emphasised that India’s legal framework must evolve in step with rapid technological advancements to remain relevant, credible, and effective.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of a landmark event marking the signing of a cooperation pact between the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), Justice Karia stressed that technology can no longer be treated as a mere accessory to law.

“For business to flourish, there must be predictability in law. Technology is no longer an accessory to the legal system. AI and others are rapidly redefining systems. Together, we can develop a shared vision on principles of progress. The challenge before us is to ensure that the legal framework evolves with technology.”

Justice Karia urged legal systems to avoid being merely reactive. Instead, he advocated comparative dialogue between India and Central Europe to experiment with new models and design frameworks that integrate technology from the outset.

Highlighting the twin pillars of sophistication and accessibility, he remarked:

“True strength of any legal system lies in sophistication and accessibility.”

He also called on lawyers to expand their professional roles beyond client advocacy, stepping into responsibilities such as shaping institutional growth, systemic reform, and mentoring younger lawyers.

Delivering a special address, Dr. Manoj Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Law and Justice, hailed the signing of the pact as a milestone in India’s legal journey.

“Law is an engine for development. Today in India, the way work has been done, we see law as a clear highway. India has articulated its vision of Viksit Bharat. Every reform, investment ultimately depends on scaffolding of law.”

Dr. Kumar highlighted the transformative role of virtual courts, e-courts, and online dispute resolution, asserting that collaboration and AI-driven innovation could position India as a global hub for arbitration and mediation.

He concluded by noting:

“When law is clear, trust grows. India is ready for the next chapter of global legal services.”

The highlight of the session was the Agreement of Cooperation between SILF and VIAC, which seeks to strengthen collaboration between Indian and Central European legal institutions through:

  • Training initiatives
