Delhi Police secured their first conviction under the new Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) laws, with a 20-year-old man sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for burglary. The new criminal laws came into effect on July 1, marking a milestone in legal enforcement.
New Delhi: Delhi Police secured their first conviction under the newly implemented Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) laws, with a 20-year-old Shakarpur resident, Neeraj, convicted of burglary. Neeraj was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment after being booked on July 9 for stealing jewellery and valuables from a Budh Vihar residence.

The case was registered under sections 305(a), 332(c), and 3(5) of the BNS, marking a significant milestone in legal enforcement, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) G S Sidhu.
The officer stated that Neeraj was arrested the following day after being identified through CCTV footage.

The officer added,
“During trial, charges were framed against Neeraj at a city court in Rohini. After the court found sufficient materials on record which established that Neeraj had committed the crime, the court held him guilty and awarded a sentence of three months to him on September 9.”
In a statement, the DCP highlighted that this marks the first conviction under the new criminal laws in Delhi, signifying a pivotal moment in the city’s legal framework.
