Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recently highlighted that true development in India must be environmentally responsible and inclusive. Speaking at the two-day International Conference on “Sustainable Energy: An Agenda for India @ 2047 – Reimagining Law, Policy, and Innovation for Energy Justice,” he stressed that growth and tradition can go hand in hand without harming each other.

During his inaugural address, CJI Kant explained how India can balance progress with sustainability by learning from cities like Bengaluru.

He stated,

“Bengaluru city offers instructive lessons that speak to the heart of what we have gathered here to discuss: that tradition and transformation need not be adversaries, that heritage and ambition can walk together without diminishing each other.”

He further pointed out how urban development and environmental protection can coexist. Referring to Bengaluru’s infrastructure and green spaces, he said,

“Within its landscape, towering software parks stand not far from expansive green spaces, and in that coexistence lies a lesson for all of us: that we can shape the future of energy justice by ensuring that the pathways of development we choose today guarantee a fair distribution of benefits and burdens, transparent decision-making, and genuine recognition of vulnerable communities.”

The conference brought together experts from law, policy, and the energy sector to discuss India’s future energy needs and the importance of fairness and sustainability in development. It focused on the idea of “energy justice,” which means ensuring that all sections of society benefit equally from energy policies and that no group is unfairly burdened.

Siddaramaiah also addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of the timing of this conference. He said,

“Karnataka is proud to host this important dialogue. As India moves towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, the scale of transformation required in the energy sector is unprecedented.”

He highlighted that energy is not just one sector but a key pillar for building a strong, inclusive, and sustainable India.

Karnataka’s Energy Minister K J George also spoke about the need for collaboration between different stakeholders. He said,

“Bringing together the judiciary, policymakers, regulators, and industry on a single platform is not an easy task, and this initiative deserves our highest appreciation.”

He underlined that such discussions are necessary for shaping effective energy policies.

The conference was jointly organised by the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and the Department of Energy, Government of Karnataka. It brought together leading judges, policymakers, industry experts, and academicians from India and abroad to discuss important issues related to sustainable energy and legal frameworks.

The inaugural session, led by CJI Surya Kant, set the direction for detailed discussions on India’s energy future. The focus remained on sustainability, innovation, and fairness in policy-making. The event also showcased Karnataka’s leadership in the energy sector, with the state taking strong steps towards progressive policies, innovation, and achieving long-term goals like Net Zero emissions.

Overall, the conference aims to support India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047 by encouraging better laws, policies, and cooperation in the energy sector. It also highlights the need for transparent governance and inclusive growth as India moves towards a sustainable and energy-secure future.
