Chief Justice of India Surya Kant will lead a special awareness walk in Panaji, Goa, on December 26 to promote mediation as a people-friendly and effective way of resolving disputes, according to event organisers. After the walk, the Chief Justice will also take part in a national-level conference focused on mediation.

The awareness walk, named the ‘Mediation Awareness Walk’, will cover a distance of around two kilometres. It is being organised jointly by the Bar Council of India (BCI), the BCI Trust, and the India International University of Legal Education and Research (IIULER), Goa.

The organisers said the programme is aimed at spreading awareness among the general public about mediation as a people-centric and efficient dispute resolution mechanism.

Giving details of the route, a spokesperson of the organisers said,

“The walk will commence from Kala Academy in Panaji. It will proceed via Dayanand Bandodkar Road towards Yog Setu near the Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) building, continue along the picturesque Mandovi riverfront promenade, and culminate back at Kala Academy.”

The spokesperson further explained that Chief Justice Surya Kant strongly supports a modern and transformative approach to dispute resolution and believes mediation offers several advantages over traditional court litigation.

He said that mediation not only reduces court burden but also helps parties reach mutually acceptable solutions in a faster and more peaceful manner. The Chief Justice will be joined during the walk by six other judges of the Supreme Court.

Apart from Supreme Court judges, several senior members of the judiciary and legal fraternity will also participate. Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Bar Council of India Chairman and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Manan Kumar Mishra, along with other members of the Bar Council and more than 25 judges from various High Courts across the country, are expected to attend the event.

Following the awareness walk, the Chief Justice of India and other dignitaries will participate in a two-day national conference and symposium on mediation.

The spokesperson said,

“Subsequently, the Chief Justice of India and other dignitaries will participate in a two-day national conference and symposium on mediation, being organised by the BCI and BCI Trust at IIULER, Goa, on December 26 and 27.”

The main theme of the conference is ‘Mediation: How Far Significant in the Present-Day Context’. The event will include technical sessions, plenary discussions, policy-level roundtables, and a specialised mediation training programme.

Legal experts, judges, policymakers and mediation professionals will discuss how mediation can play a bigger role in resolving disputes efficiently in today’s legal system and how it can be strengthened further across India.
