"The Idea is to Create a Safe & Appealing Environment": CJI DY Chandrachud on the Inauguration of a New Creche and Bank of Maharashtra Branch Within the Supreme Court Premises

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud inaugurated a new branch of the Bank of Maharashtra and a state-of-the-art crèche within the premises of the Supreme Court of India. The new crèche is designed to cater to the needs of the staff and advocates of the Supreme Court, providing a safe and welcoming environment for their children.

Speaking at the inauguration, CJI Chandrachud remarked-

“My colleagues and I have inaugurated a new crèche for the staff of the Supreme Court of India. We have such a large number of young lawyers who come here every day to work. We have almost 2,500 members of the Supreme Court… This crèche can accommodate around 100 children. The idea is to create a safe and appealing environment.”

The Chief Justice also announced improvements to the crèche facilities available for Supreme Court staff and advocates, highlighting the increased capacity to now accommodate up to 100 children, reflecting the growing needs of the court’s community.

“We have a play area, feeding area, sleeping area and a dining area for the young children. This is to encourage more women lawyers to participate in the legal profession without any uncertainty about the safety of their children,”

he added.

The CJI further said that other organizations should take the cue from this as it will encourage more women enrolment.

“I hope other organizations take the cue from us and create these facilities because this is a way we can encourage more women to come into the workplace and create safe working conditions for the children,”

he said.

After inaugurating the creche, when the CJI sat on the bench to hear the cases, he said,

“So sorry we were all late. But we dedicated the new creche to benefit the young men and women lawyers. Earlier creche was about 200 sqm for 30 children but now it’s close to 400 sqm for nearly 100 kids.”

During the event, a light-hearted moment was shared in the courtroom when CJI Chandrachud suggested that the Solicitor General (SG) might visit the new crèche, jokingly adding,

“Mr. SG, maybe you should go and see it once you… maybe not children but you do have grandchildren.”

To this, the Solicitor General humorously responded,

“Your Lordships, I am waiting for a judge to tell me that my arguments are childish and then I will go there… (laughs).”

"The Idea is to Create a Safe & Appealing Environment": CJI DY Chandrachud on the Inauguration of a New Creche and Bank of Maharashtra Branch Within the Supreme Court Premises

The inauguration of a new Bank of Maharashtra branch and a crèche within the Supreme Court of India premises by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud marks a significant step in enhancing the work-life balance and well-being of the court’s staff and the legal community.

This development not only reflects the Supreme Court’s commitment to supporting its workforce but also highlights broader themes of workplace inclusivity and modernization.

  • Support for Young Lawyers and Staff:

The introduction of a crèche with a capacity of 100 children is particularly noteworthy. The Supreme Court is a high-pressure environment with demanding hours, and many young lawyers and staff members, including working parents, are part of its ecosystem. By providing a dedicated childcare facility, the court is acknowledging the challenges faced by working parents and taking concrete steps to alleviate them. This move is likely to enhance productivity, reduce stress, and support the retention of talent within the legal profession.

  • Modernization and Inclusivity:

The CJI’s comments emphasize the importance of creating a “safe and appealing environment” for children, which also speaks to the modernization of the judiciary’s infrastructure. This is not just about providing basic amenities but ensuring that the facilities are of high quality, reflecting modern standards of care. The initiative underscores the judiciary’s awareness of the evolving needs of its members and its willingness to adapt to those needs.

  • Symbolic Leadership:

CJI Chandrachud’s involvement in the inauguration highlights his leadership style, which seems to prioritize the well-being of the court’s community. By directly engaging in the enhancement of amenities, the CJI is setting a tone that recognizes the human aspects of working within the judiciary. This is an important signal to the broader legal community and other institutions about the value of nurturing a supportive work environment.

  • Cultural and Social Impact:

The light-hearted exchange between the CJI and the Solicitor General during the inauguration ceremony, where the SG humorously referenced the crèche in relation to his arguments, reflects a culture of collegiality within the court. Such moments, while informal, contribute to a more relatable and approachable image of the judiciary, potentially making the court’s environment more congenial and less intimidating for its members.

  • Long-Term Implications:

The establishment of such facilities could set a precedent for other institutions in India, particularly within the public sector, to prioritize the well-being of their employees by offering similar amenities. This could lead to broader discussions about workplace policies that support families and address the needs of working parents, potentially influencing national policy discussions on labor and family welfare.

The inauguration of the crèche and the Bank of Maharashtra branch within the Supreme Court premises represents more than just the addition of new facilities; it is a strategic move towards modernizing the judiciary’s work environment and supporting the holistic well-being of its community.

CJI Chandrachud’s actions reflect a leadership approach that is attuned to the needs of the present-day workforce, and the initiative could have a ripple effect, influencing how other institutions approach employee welfare and inclusivity.
