CJI BR Gavai visited Gray’s Inn, where Dr Ambedkar studied law, and delivered a speech celebrating 75 years of the Indian Constitution. He honoured Ambedkar’s legacy and credited his own journey to Ambedkar’s vision of equality and justice.

London: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, who is the second Dalit ever to hold the top position in the Indian judiciary, recently visited Gray’s Inn in London. This prestigious institution is where Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution and one of India’s most respected legal minds, studied law.
During this special visit, CJI Gavai delivered a lecture titled
“The Living Document: 75 Years of the Constitution of India and the Enduring Relevance of Dr Ambedkar.”
In his speech, he expressed his deep respect for Dr Ambedkar and the emotional connection he felt being at the place where Ambedkar’s legal journey began.
He said,
“It was a privilege to be at Gray’s Inn, where Ambedkar shaped his legal thoughts and developed the intellectual foundation that would later contribute to the formation of India’s Constitution.”
CJI Gavai further added,
“Standing here today, I am reminded of the incredible legacy Dr. Ambedkar left behind, not only in the legal field but in the very fabric of Indian democracy. His efforts to ensure that India’s Constitution enshrines equality, liberty, justice and fraternity for all resonate deeply, and being in this space today, where it all began for him, brings a sense of connection to his enduring impact on our legal system.”
He also proudly reflected on his own journey, coming from a marginalised community, and how Ambedkar’s vision had made it possible for someone like him to rise to the highest judicial office in India.
CJI Gavai said,
“Dr. Ambedkar’s vision of a just and inclusive society, as enshrined in our Constitution, opened the doors for individuals from marginalised communities to overcome the social and economic barriers that once kept them away from entering the mainstream of life.”
As a mark of respect, Gray’s Inn organised a special viewing of Dr Ambedkar’s portraits and archival materials during the visit, honouring his legacy and remembering his contributions to law and justice.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Lady Justice Geraldine Andrews (Master Treasurer), Lady Arden of Heswall (former Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom), Justice Vikram Nath from the Supreme Court of India, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (i/c) Arjun Ram Meghwal, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, and Senior Advocate Gourab Banerji.
