Gavai highlighted the Constitution’s principles of equality and justice, celebrating Ambedkar’s enduring relevance in Indian democracy.
Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud highlighted the significance of fraternity as the essence of democracy at a Kochi lecture. He stressed its role in promoting love and human dignity, cautioning against existential threats like climate change. He also underscored India’s workforce potential while noting the concerning low female workforce participation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will celebrate the 75th Constitution Day today (26th Nov), at the Supreme Court of India, where he will release the Indian Judiciary’s annual report and deliver a speech. The year-long campaign, ‘Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhiman,’ aims to promote constitutional values nationwide, emphasizing Dr. Ambedkar’s role and notable contributions in drafting the Constitution.

Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai praised the Kesavananda Bharati judgment for advancing social and economic justice during the SN Bhuyan centenary lecture. He highlighted the evolution of fundamental rights and the strides made in ensuring social and economic justice, particularly for women and marginalized communities. The event honored SN Bhuyan, father of current Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
Today, 15th April, Justice BR Gavai attributed his Supreme Court appointment to Dr. BR Ambedkar’s legacy, highlighting the empowerment of marginalized communities. He emphasized the transformative role of Article 32 and the need for constructive critique of the judiciary. Senior Advocate Indira Jaising expressed allegiance to the Indian Constitution and the need for clarity on Article 15.
“If not for giving representation to Scheduled Castes, I would have been elevated maybe two years later,” : Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai emphasized the role of reservation and affirmative action in elevating marginalized individuals in India’s government. He credited his own advancement to these principles and highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion in the judiciary. Justice Gavai also addressed challenges such as media manipulation and emphasized the CJI’s duty to provide equal leadership.
On Tuesday (26th March): Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai highlighted the integral relationship between the right to free speech and the right to information, especially in the context of elections and the Electoral Bonds case. Emphasizing the evolution from colonialism to democracy, he reaffirmed the Court’s commitment to upholding constitutional values and encouraging citizen participation.
