Justice BR Gavai (Next CJI) Pays Tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: "The Constitution Rose Me From Slum to Supreme Court"

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India in New Delhi saw a heartfelt tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his birth anniversary. The tribute was given by Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, who is expected to become the Chief Justice of India in May 2025.

Justice Gavai remembered and appreciated the great contributions of Dr. Ambedkar, who is known as the father of the Indian Constitution.

While speaking during the occasion, Justice Gavai expressed deep respect and thankfulness towards Dr. Ambedkar. He shared how Ambedkar’s ideas and leadership helped to shape India’s future and uplift the underprivileged sections of society.

Justice Gavai said,

“The nation is always grateful to Dr. Ambedkar because of the Constitution framed by him and his colleagues. India is strong, progressing, and one of the fastest developing countries in the world. It is his philosophy, ideology, and vision that is keeping us united and strong.”

Justice Gavai also became emotional while talking about his own journey. He shared that he came from a very humble background and could reach this high post only because of Dr. Ambedkar’s hard work and dedication for equality and justice.

He said,

“It is solely due to Dr B R Ambedkar’s efforts that someone like me, who studied in a semi-slum area at a municipal school could attain this position.”

He explained how the Indian Constitution, which was built on Dr. Ambedkar’s vision, has changed the lives of many people and brought justice to society.

Justice Gavai added,

“It is only because of the Indian Constitution and the vision of Dr Ambedkar that we have progressed towards social and economic justice.”

Justice Gavai also spoke about Article 32 of the Constitution. He said this article is a strong tool that helps bring positive change through the law.

He said,

“Article 32 has been used as a tool for transformative justice.”

Talking about the importance of reservations in education and jobs for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), Justice Gavai explained that these steps were important to create real equality.

He said,

“Reservations were necessary to achieve true equality.”

He ended his speech by highlighting how the Indian Constitution marked a big change in how the country is governed. From being ruled under the British Queen, India became a country that follows the will of its people.

He proudly said,

“The Constitution of India is evidence of the transformation of the governance structure in India from colonialism to democracy and from the ‘order of the Queen’ to the ‘will of the people’.”

Even today, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar remains an inspiration for millions across India. Known as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, his dream of justice, equality, and dignity for all continues to guide the nation forward.

His life and work have shown that with education, courage, and the right to speak, big change is possible — even for the most oppressed sections of society.
