CJI B.R. Gavai: “Women Empowerment Remains a Cornerstone of Justice Delivery System”

NEW DELHI: In a gathering of India’s legal minds, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), in collaboration with the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and the Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority, hosted the North Zone Regional Conference in Srinagar on the theme: “In Conversation with the Bar — A Shared Vision for Legal Transformation.”

This prestigious event witnessed the presence of Chief Justice of India Dr. B.R. Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, and several other Supreme Court and High Court judges.

Presiding over the conference, CJI Gavai, also the Patron-in-Chief of NALSA, reaffirmed the constitutional mandate of last-mile access to justice, particularly for marginalized and underprivileged communities.

In his address, he praised NALSA’s efforts and stated:

“NALSA, under the leadership of Justice Surya Kant and in future Justice Vikram Nath, will continue to pave the way for a stronger, more inclusive justice delivery system. Women empowerment remains a cornerstone of this vision.”

Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court judge and Executive Chairman of NALSA, expressed this sentiment and underlined the increasingly transformative role of women in the region’s legal landscape. He remarked:

“The future of the justice delivery system in this region will largely be led by women members of the legal fraternity—whether on the Bench or the Bar.”

The conference showcased a clear vision for a women-led legal transformation, aligning with national and global trends towards gender equity in the legal profession.

Justice P.S. Narasimha offered a touching reminder of the intrinsic unity between the judiciary and the legal fraternity:

“The Bar and Bench are two wheels of the same chariot.”

He praised the adaptability and creativity of lawyers practicing in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, noting their essential role in driving legal innovation and upholding the rule of law in evolving circumstances.

Chief Justice Arun Palli of the J&K High Court commended the intellectual clarity and legal precision of young lawyers while praising senior advocates for maintaining high professional standards.

In his concluding remarks, CJI Gavai appealed for unity, collaboration, and national integration.
