AMRAVATI: In today’s ceremony held in Maharashtra’s Amravati district, Chief Justice of India B R Gavai paid homage to his late father, R S Gavai, a respected public servant and former governor of Kerala and Bihar. The tribute took place at their native village, Darapur, where the CJI laid floral offerings at his father’s memorial, marking his death anniversary with dignity and reverence.
Joined by close family members and local dignitaries, the Chief Justice commemorated R S Gavai—affectionately known as Dadasaheb Gavai—not only with words of remembrance but also with concrete action aimed at preserving his enduring legacy.
In a heartfelt gesture, Justice Gavai laid the foundation stone for a new entrance gate named after his father. This gate, which will soon adorn the route leading to Darapur village, stands as a symbol of respect and familial pride. More than a physical structure, the gate signifies the Gavai family’s deep-rooted connection to their village and their commitment to honoring R S Gavai’s lifetime of service.
The tribute extended beyond familial commemoration into meaningful contributions to the judicial landscape of Amravati. Chief Justice Gavai is set to inaugurate a new court building in Daryapur, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to expanding access to justice in semi-urban and rural Maharashtra.

Further inaugurating the district’s growing legal and cultural significance, the Late TR Gilda Memorial E-Library will be inaugurated by the CJI on Saturday at the Amravati District and Sessions Court. This state-of-the-art digital facility is a long-awaited promise fulfilled, a vision originally initiated by former Chief Justice Sharad Bobde in 2018. It is poised to empower legal practitioners, students, and researchers with access to valuable resources in a modern, tech-enabled environment.
Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai (1929-2015)
Justice B.R. Gavai is the son of Ramkrishna Suryabhan Gavai (1929–2015), known as ‘Dadasaheb’, who was a prominent Ambedkarite leader and close associate of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Ramkrishna Gavai also served as the Chairman of the Deekshabhoomi Smarak Samiti in Nagpur, a central site in the Buddhist movement in India.
The senior Gavai was actively involved in Maharashtra politics from 1964 to 1998 and went on to establish the Republican Party of India (Gavai), an Ambedkarite political group.
In 1998, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Amravati as a candidate of the Republican Party of India. Later, during the Congress-led UPA government, he served as Governor of Bihar, Sikkim, and Kerala between 2006 and 2011.
One of the defining moments of his tenure came in 2009, when, as Governor of Kerala, he disregarded the recommendation of the state cabinet and authorized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute Pinarayi Vijayan, now the Chief Minister of Kerala, in the SNC-Lavalin case, which involved alleged corruption in hydropower project contracts. This decision was supported by the Congress-led central government in court, despite the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) being in opposition in the state at the time.
