BREAKING | CJI Gavai's Advice To New Lawyers: "If You Want A Mercedes Or BMW In Only 6 Months Then..."

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India BR Gavai delivered a powerful message to aspiring lawyers at a memorial function in Darapur, his native village in Maharashtra’s Amravati district.

Speaking on the 10th death anniversary of his father, RS Gavai, a respected public servant and former Governor of Kerala and Bihar, the Chief Justice reminded the legal fraternity of its foundational purpose: to serve.

Addressing a crowd that included law students, practicing lawyers, and locals, CJI Gavai warned against the growing trend of instant gratification in the legal profession. He said, criticizing the entitlement culture taking root among some fresh graduates.

“If one wants to argue in courts without any experience and own a Mercedes or BMW in six months, then one needs to understand their motive.”

He emphasized the importance of apprenticeship and humility, urging young lawyers to first serve under experienced seniors before launching independent practice. Stressing that real learning happens not in law school, but in the courtroom trenches, he said,

“Junior lawyers must undergo an apprenticeship before starting off on their own.”

Chief Justice Gavai lamented the erosion of professional decorum and mutual respect in courts. Citing real-life examples, he spoke of junior lawyers who did not offer seats to their seniors, and one who fainted in court after being scolded by a judge, incidents that reflect both entitlement and fragility in equal measure. Reiterating the ethical backbone of the judiciary, he declared,

“Judges and lawyers are equal partners in the legal system. The chair, symbolizing judicial power, exists to serve the people. Power should never go to one’s head.”

CJI Gavai announced that he will not accept any post-retirement position offered by the government after his tenure ends in November 2025. He said,

“I will try to spend more time in Darapur, Amravati, and Nagpur.”
