Artificial vs Natural Intelligence | "Will AI Replace Lawyers?": Law Intern Denied ChatGPT Use for Witness Analysis, Given Hard Copies By Senior Advocate

NEW DELHI: With AI transforming multiple sectors, the legal profession is re-evaluating its role within traditional frameworks.

A recent viral post by senior advocate Sidharth Luthra on X reignited debate after a law intern shared that he was barred from using ChatGPT to analyse witness statements in an appeal case.

Luthra recounted how a law intern in his office suggested using ChatGPT to analyse witness statements for an appeal case. The intern believed AI could help break down and interpret complex testimonies. But his supervising mentor rejected the idea outright.

Instead of allowing AI-driven analysis, the intern was handed a stack of hard copies, with a clear directive to use “natural intelligence” rather than artificial intelligence.

“A law intern wanted to use Chat GPT to analyse witness statements for an appeal in my office. His mentor gave him hard copies to use natural Intelligence instead of artificial Intelligence!!!!”

The story ignited passionate reactions online, especially from legal professionals, tech enthusiasts, and students who see AI as a tool of the future.

One user commented:

“AI can very well read and analyse hard copies as well. At times better than humans. Law practitioners must embrace AI, not oppose it.”

Others highlighted real-world examples of AI already in use, even in law enforcement:

“In some prominent police stations in Telugu states, officers are reportedly using ChatGPT to prepare remand copies. Statements were being recorded and processed by AI, all without the accused knowing.”

The incident has sparked broader discussions around the appropriate use and timing of AI integration in legal workflows. While some view it as a challenge to tradition, ethics, and employment, others highlight the benefits of tools like ChatGPT in enhancing research efficiency, drafting precision, and reducing repetitive tasks.

“AI won’t replace lawyers, but lawyers who use AI will replace those who don’t.”
