On Wednesday, March 20, the Ranchi Court summoned the former business partners of former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni, in connection with a cheating case. Dhoni filed a case against his former business partners, accusing them of cheating him of around Rs 16 crore.

Ranchi: On Wednesday, March 20 : A court in Ranchi directed the issuance of summons to the former business partners of former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni in connection with a cheating case.

According to the legal representative of the cricketer, Dhoni has lodged a lawsuit against his previous business associates, alleging that they defrauded him of approximately Rs 16 crore breaching an agreement to set up cricket academies.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class passed the order to issue summons, in the case that was lodged in October 2023 against two directors of a company under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC, stated Dhoni’s lawyer, Dayanand Singh.

According to Singh, that the accused persons have opened academies in eight to 10 places in Dhoni’s name without sharing money with the cricketer, causing losses of Rs 16 crore to the former India skipper.

“Cognisance has been taken. The court has directed the issuance of summons to the accused persons,” Singh affirmed.

The cause of action arose when the company directors purportedly approached Dhoni in 2017 with a proposal to set up cricket academies in India and overseas. Initially, an agreement was reached wherein Dhoni would receive the complete franchise fee, with profits to be divided on a 70:30 basis between Dhoni and his partners, Singh claimed.

Subsequently, allegations surfaced that the partners established academies without Dhoni’s consent and failed to compensate him accordingly.

The authority granted to them was reportedly rescinded on August 15, 2021, Singh disclosed.

Nevertheless, the accused allegedly persisted in establishing cricket academies and sports complexes under Dhoni’s name without providing any information or compensation to him.

Singh further revealed that legal notices were issued to them on two occasions for breaching the terms of the agreement.
