Justice Mithal was born on June 17, 1961. He hails from a family of lawyers, with his grandfather, Mr. Babu Brij Nath Mithal, his uncle, Mr. Raghuvar Dayal Mithal, and his father, Mr. Narendra Nath Mithal, all having legal backgrounds. His uncle specialized in civil matters, while his father served as a permanent Judge of the Allahabad High Court in 1982.
Justice Mithal completed his Commerce degree at Allahabad University in 1982 and then enrolled at Chaudhary Charan Singh University to pursue an L.L.B., graduating in 1985.
Thereafter he enrolled at the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council in 1985. By 1990, he had been appointed as the Standing Counsel for the Uttar Pradesh Housing and Development Board – Avas Evam Vikas Parishad, Lucknow, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra.

He was a member of the Sub-Committee on Coins and Postage Stamps at the Allahabad High Court.“
On July 7, 2006, Justice Mithal was appointed an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court and became a permanent Judge on July 2, 2008. He was elevated to Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court on January 4, 2021, and was later transferred to the Rajasthan High Court as Chief Justice on October 14, 2022.Throughout his judicial career, Justice Mithal has delivered over 37,000 judgments on a range of topics including housing, banking, succession, and labor laws. He has also been actively involved in various administrative functions at the Allahabad High Court, including serving on committees for the construction of the High Court museum, Higher Judicial Services, and the Library Committee.
