The Madras High Court passed an interim injunction restraining unauthorized broadcast of the film Parasakthi, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sreleela, by internet service providers and cable television operators. Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy granted relief on Dawn Pictures’ copyright infringement plea lawsuit.
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court issued an interim injunction to prevent the unauthorized broadcast of the film Parasakthi, featuring Sivakarthikeyan and Sreleela, by internet service providers and cable television operators.
This order was granted by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy in response to a lawsuit from the film’s producer, Aakash Baskaran’s company, Dawn Pictures, which raised concerns about copyright infringement.
The Court noted that failing to restrict unlawful broadcasts could cause irreversible harm to the filmmakers. However, it also recognized the potential repercussions of such an order on legitimate businesses.
Parasakthi is an upcoming Tamil political drama set against the backdrop of the 1965 Anti-Hindi Imposition agitations in Tamil Nadu. Directed and written by Sudha Kongara, the film is produced by Aakash Baskaran of Dawn Pictures.
The cast includes Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, alongside Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa Murali, and Sreeleela in significant roles. The music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar, marking his 100th project as a composer, with cinematography by Ravi K Chandran.
The Court stated,
“In view of the expensive nature of the relief claimed, it is possible that the legitimate business interest of one or more respondents may be affected,”
To address this issue, the Court has required the plaintiff to indemnify any respondent whose legitimate business interests may suffer due to the restraining order. The decision was made after the Court reviewed the plaintiff’s claims regarding the film, including documents demonstrating title and licensing agreements.
During the hearing, the Court carefully examined the nature of the plaintiff’s rights, questioning whether the plaintiff was an exclusive licensee or the actual producer of the film before ultimately granting the interim injunction.
This injunction will remain in effect until the next scheduled hearing, and the Court has requested responses from all respondents, including ISPs and cable operators.
The film has generated considerable interest due to its political themes, historical context, and its status as a significant festive release in Tamil cinema.
Parasakthi is slated for theatrical release on January 10, 2026, just before the Pongal festival.
