The Delhi High Court granted interim bail to MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh until June 2 in an alleged terror financing case. The relief followed the death of his father prompting the court to temporarily suspend custody.

The Delhi High Court granted interim bail until June 2 to Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, in a case involving alleged terror financing, following the death of his father.

A bench of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Madhu Jain allowed the interim relief so Rashid could attend the burial, conduct customary last rites, and carry out other bereavement-related ceremonies.

The court also noted that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) counsel, Akshai Malik, confirmed his father’s death during the night between May 17 and May 18.

In a seven-page order, the bench directed that Rashid must remain accompanied by at least two police personnel in plain clothes during the entire period of his interim bail.

The court said in its order,

“The said police officials shall accompany him from the beginning of the journey from the concerned jail till the time he returns from Srinagar…For the purpose of customary rights, the Appellant shall be permitted to visit the burial ground or any other place of worship. Apart from the said venues, the Appellant shall not be permitted to move anywhere else,”

Earlier, Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh’s counsel appeared before the Delhi High Court seeking modification of the interim bail order granted to him.

Abdul Rashid Sheikh has requested that the order be amended to allow him to travel to Delhi to meet his father, who has been shifted from Srinagar to AIIMS Delhi.

Rashid won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by more than two lakh votes.

A special NIA court framed charges against him in March 2022 under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA, including allegations of criminal conspiracy, waging war against the state, and terror funding. He has challenged that order before the High Court.
