Karnataka govt informs High Court that CID will investigate the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede. FIR registered; SIT to ensure an independent and thorough probe into the tragic incident.
Bengaluru: Today, on June 05, the Karnataka government has told the High Court that the case related to the tragic stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which caused the death of 11 people, has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a detailed investigation.
This tragic incident took place in front of the stadium, leading to serious public concern and legal action. To ensure a fair and unbiased inquiry, the government has also announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) within the CID.
During the court proceedings, the government submitted a status report, informing the court that the investigation would be conducted by this newly formed SIT.
The report added that a First Information Report (FIR) has already been registered. The FIR, bearing Crime No. 123/2025, has been filed at the Cubbon Park Police Station.
The FIR includes serious charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which is the new criminal law code.
These sections include Section 105, Section 125(1) and (2), Section 132, Section 121/1, and Section 190 read with Section 3(5).

These provisions mainly deal with offences such as endangering human life, causing death by negligence, and failing to take safety measures at large gatherings.
A government representative stated that
“a Special Investigation Team (SIT) within the CID will be formed to ensure a thorough and independent probe.”
What Happened?
On June 4, 2025, a tragic stampede took place outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during a public celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic first-ever IPL title win.
The stadium premises, which have a maximum capacity of around 35,000, witnessed an overwhelming crowd of over 2 lakh fans.
The situation spiraled out of control when a rumour spread that free passes were being distributed at Gate 7, causing a massive rush of people. This led to chaos, a deadly stampede, and the loss of 11 lives, with more than 50 others injured.
Karnataka High Court Hearing: June 5
A day after the incident, the Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognizance of the stampede and directed the State Government to provide a detailed report. In the hearing held on June 5, the government submitted its status report, confirming that the matter had been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
It also stated that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be formed under the CID to ensure an impartial and in-depth investigation.
The government informed the court that an FIR bearing Crime No. 123/2025 has been registered at the Cubbon Park Police Station.
The FIR lists multiple sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 105, 125(1) and (2), 132, 121/1, and 190 read with Section 3(5), which pertain to criminal negligence, public safety violations, and unlawful crowd conduct.

During the hearing, the court raised several critical questions to the state, such as:
“What was the obligation of the state to felicitate players who are not playing for the country?”
“Who conducted the programme, and why was it held in two places – Vidhan Soudha and the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium?”
“What steps were taken by the government to manage the crowd moving towards the stadium?”
The court has now scheduled the next hearing for June 10 and will continue monitoring the developments.
Aftermath and Reactions
Following the tragedy, the RCB team expressed deep grief and pledged financial support of ₹10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives. They also announced the launch of the “RCB Cares” fund aimed at supporting the injured and those affected.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured that the State Government would cover all medical expenses for the injured individuals, whether they were admitted to government or private hospitals.
