Justice Saurabh Banerjee of the Delhi High Court strongly criticised a lawyer for falsely claiming relation with another lawyer, calling her a “blatant liar” in open court, warning of debarment and strict action to protect judicial integrity.
Justice Saurabh Banerjee of the Delhi High Court recently expressed strong disapproval of a lawyer’s behavior during a case, particularly after she claimed that he was related to another lawyer involved.
During a hearing on Justice Banerjee firmly stated that the allegation was false, labeling the lawyer a “blatant liar.”
He remarked,
“In the open court, she had the audacity… She came to my court master and the court master came to my room (to tell me about it). I said there was nothing of the sort.”
The judge emphasized the importance of addressing such falsehoods promptly, stating,
“It is very unnerving for a sitting judge to come to know, in open court that someone says I am your relative… I don’t know how many relatives will sprout up if this is not nipped in the bud.”
Justice Banerjee issued a warning that he would take action to bar the lawyer from practicing at the Delhi High Court.
He asserted,
“She is going to be debarred from appearing in Delhi High Court, confirmed. Her license will be surrendered. I am not going to make a change,”
He also posed a question to the leaders of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) present in the courtroom, asking how they would feel if placed in his situation.
