The Karnataka Government appointed a new panel of law officers to represent the State before the High Court, including 42 Additional Government Advocates and 27 Government Pleaders. The appointments feature significant women representation, with 26 women lawyers selected across both categories.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant revealed that a robust mechanism is being developed to increase women’s representation in the legal profession. Emphasising his commitment, he said, “I am not a person who only make statements,” while highlighting steps including 30% reservation for women in Bar bodies.
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended Senior Advocate V Mohana for elevation as Supreme Court judge, marking a landmark moment for women’s representation in the judiciary, with her distinguished legal career recognised as a significant breakthrough in a profession historically dominated by men across India.
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet has approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill based on a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report. The report was presented in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha during the first half of the 2025 Budget Session. This approval comes after heated debates and protests by opposition MPs in Parliament.
Today, On 24th January, The Supreme Court directed that the post of Treasurer in the Advocates Association Bengaluru (AAB) be reserved for women. The Court also instructed the association to ensure representation of women lawyers in its governing council. This move aims to promote gender equality and inclusivity in the legal profession. The decision highlights the importance of women’s participation in leadership roles within legal bodies.
Today(on 18th July),The Delhi High Court issued notices to several Bar Associations, including the BCI, BCD, DHCBA, and district courts’ Bar Associations, following a plea for 33% reservation for women lawyers in upcoming elections. The plea highlights the lack of female representation in leadership positions and the burden placed on young women lawyers. The detailed hearing is scheduled for August 12.
