Chief Justice of India Surya Kant led a Women’s Day walkathon in Chandigarh during India International Disputes Week 2026, joined by judges, lawyers, and students. The event aimed to spread awareness about women’s rights and highlight the legal community’s support for gender equality.
Despite progress in lower courts, women remain severely underrepresented in India’s higher judiciary, with only one woman judge currently serving in the Supreme Court. On International Women’s Day, the numbers highlight the urgent need for reforms to break the judicial “glass ceiling.”
Justice Mini Pushkarna said greater representation of women in leadership roles strengthens institutions and leads to more inclusive decision-making. Speaking at an event by the Indian Council of Arbitration, she stressed that justice deepens when diverse perspectives shape policies and decisions.
The Supreme Court Bar Association has extended the deadline for submitting responses to its National Survey of Women Advocates till February 15. The survey aims to document the lived experiences of women lawyers and support efforts towards a more inclusive and equitable legal profession.
