The Supreme Court will hear key petitions on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and freezing of electoral rolls in West Bengal before the Assembly elections. The case also covers the “gherao” of judicial officers, with the Court already ordering an NIA probe.
The Calcutta High Court Bar Association condemned the Malda incident where judicial officers were allegedly held hostage during electoral roll revision. A lawyer accused of instigating the attack has been suspended, with further action sought from the Bar Council of West Bengal.
The Supreme Court took serious action after judicial officers were attacked and gheraoed in West Bengal during election roll revision work. The Court called it a “challenge to the authority of this Court” and ordered an independent probe and immediate security deployment.
The Supreme Court dismissed an application objecting to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally appearing before it in the SIR electoral rolls case. The CJI-led Bench said such an appearance is “not unheard of” and reflects faith in the Constitution.
