Today, On 12th December, A tense moment arose in the Supreme Court when an NGO filed a writ petition seeking to overturn one of the Court’s own judgments. The Bench warned the petitioner, saying, “Let this serve as a message. You cannot try to crumble the judiciary of this country.”
In a landmark Full Court decision on December 10, 2025, the Supreme Court exercised its constitutional powers to confer Senior Advocate status on four retired High Court judges, marking a significant moment for the Indian legal fraternity.
The Supreme Court of India has designated five former High Court judges, including one former Chief Justice, as Senior Advocates. The decision was made in a Full Court Meeting held on October 29, 2025, and takes effect immediately.
Today, On 31st October, The Supreme Court ruled that investigating agencies must not summon advocates representing the accused, stressing that “such summons could infringe fundamental rights of the accused” and violate statutory provisions protecting lawyer-client confidentiality under Section 132 and the new BNSS framework.
The Supreme Court issued bailable warrants against advocate Mukut Nath Verma for filing a “scandalous and frivolous” complaint against SCBA Election Committee members and judges. The Court warned such defamatory actions cannot go unchecked and prima facie constitute criminal contempt.
The Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana has given a clean chit to Senior Advocates Rakesh Nehra and Puneet Bali in the bench hunting probe. The Committee said no evidence surfaced against them and their integrity remains untarnished.
In the presidential reference case, CJI B.R. Gavai initially refused Harish Salve’s urgent mention but permitted him to appear virtually after personal reasons were cited. The court stressed such requests should go through the AoR and questioned the presence of top law officers.
Today, On 14th July, The Supreme Court has ruled that High Courts have the authority to suo motu designate lawyers as Senior Advocates, setting aside the Orissa High Court’s 2019 decision and upholding the designations of five lawyers made through this process.
Today, On 16th June, The Supreme Court once again questioned why top lawyers appear during court vacations, saying, “We don’t understand the appearance of senior counsel in vacations.” The bench expressed concern over disregarding regular court procedures during breaks.
Today, On 4th June, The Supreme Court criticised the rising trend of newly designated senior advocates skipping ongoing cases. Justice Amanullah called it “highly unethical,” stressing that becoming a senior advocate means greater responsibility, not an excuse to avoid appearances.
