The Chandausi civil court has postponed the Shahi Jama Masjid-Harihar temple case to August 21 due to a lawyers’ strike. The case involves claims that the mosque stands over a pre-existing Hindu temple.
Today, On 9th April, Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal, Zia Ur Rehman Barq, has filed a case in the Supreme Court against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. He said the new law is unfair to the Muslim community. According to him, it puts special restrictions on Waqf properties that are not there for other religions. He believes this law is against the idea of equality and religious freedom in India.
Today, On 1st April, The Supreme Court declined to hear a plea challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order on the whitewashing of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal. The High Court had directed the ASI to carry out the whitewashing, with the costs to be borne by the mosque committee. The decision follows tensions that arose after a mosque survey led to riots last year. The whitewashing process has already begun as per the High Court’s mandate.
The Allahabad High Court allowed the whitewashing of Sambhal Jama Masjid, set to finish in a week. Heavy security, including CCTV and drones, has been deployed amid past violence concerns.

The decision came after the ASI inspected the site and found no need for painting. The Muslim side had requested painting before Ramadan, but the Hindu side opposed it, citing concerns over evidence tampering. The court’s ruling brings relief to the Hindu side while the Muslim side may present further arguments in the next hearing.
Allahabad: Today, 27th Feb, The Allahabad High Court instructed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to inspect the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal to determine whether it requires whitewashing and painting. This decision came after the mosque management committee sought permission to carry out the maintenance work before Ramzan.
The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court about encroachment claims related to the Shahi Jama Masjid, asserting it lies on public land amidst ongoing legal disputes and previous violence.
The Supreme Court directed a petitioner, Mohammed Ghayoor, to approach the jurisdictional high court for contempt proceedings against Sambhal authorities for allegedly violating demolition guidelines. Authorities bulldozed Ghayoor’s property without prior notice in January, contravening a ruling that requires a showcause notice and a response opportunity. The high court is deemed the appropriate forum for redress.
