A Sessions Court in Gandhinagar has granted regular bail to journalist Ravi Nair, who was arrested on a non-bailable warrant in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises. Nair had been convicted by a magistrate and his sentence suspended pending appeal, but was taken into custody this month after a court declined to cancel the warrant. His plea for release had also been argued before the Supreme Court and the Gujarat High Court.

His counsel mentioned the matter before the CJI for urgent listing, which was not entertained. Nair contends the warrant breached the graded procedure the Supreme Court requires before a non-bailable warrant is issued.

The Madras High Court has ordered criminal action against Advocate R. Balasubramanian for obstructing the police from executing a non-bailable warrant and using abusive language against the judiciary. The Court highlighted his misconduct harmed the legal profession’s image and directed the Bar Council to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him.
