The Supreme Court of India has ruled that public figures holding high constitutional offices cannot target any community based on religion, caste, language or region. The Court stressed that freedom of speech cannot be misused to vilify or denigrate any section of society.
The Supreme Court dismissed a plea over the film “Ghooskhor Pandat” after filmmaker Neeraj Pandey withdrew the title and promotional materials. Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan accepted his affidavit, stating no further directions were required.
The Supreme Court issued notice to the makers of Ghooskhor Pandat and warned that the film will not be allowed to release unless its new title is disclosed. The Court also questioned whether the movie contains “something offensive towards a community” and sought an affidavit from the producers.
