Senior lawyer Surjit Nath Mitra has taken charge as the new Advocate General of West Bengal, assuming office on Friday. His appointment comes after Kishore Dutta resigned on May 5, following the recent shift in state power structure.
The Calcutta High Court reserved judgment on a petition challenging the West Bengal government’s financial aid scheme offering Rs. 25,000 for Group C and Rs. 20,000 for Group D employees dismissed due to the Supreme Court’s verdict on the flawed 2016 recruitment process. Legal objections questioned the scheme’s constitutionality and authority.
