Today, On 5th February, The Supreme Court criticised States for appointing acting police chiefs instead of sending timely DGP recommendations to the UPSC. It said delays harmed senior officers’ careers and asked the UPSC to approach the Court when States stall appointments.
The Union Public Service Commission returned West Bengal’s proposal for appointing a Director General of Police, intensifying friction between the state government and the Centre. Citing delays, the UPSC urged the Trinamool led administration to approach the Supreme Court urgently.
Today, On 18th August, In the DGP appointments case, the Supreme Court said contempt cannot be used to settle political disputes and clarified that the proper forum is CAT, stressing that PIL jurisdiction is meant only to protect socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
