The Supreme Court has asked key Union ministries to submit a joint proposal to phase out coal-based industries in Delhi-NCR as part of long-term pollution control measures. The Court will also examine vehicular pollution on March 12 amid rising concerns over worsening air quality in the region.
The Supreme Court took note of Delhi-NCR’s worsening air quality as AQI crossed 450 in several areas. CJI B.R. Gavai directed Punjab and Haryana to explain steps to curb stubble burning amid “hazardous” pollution levels.
The Supreme Court will hear the firecracker ban case on October 10, just ahead of Diwali. The Bench led by CJI B.R. Gavai will decide on restrictions in Delhi-NCR amid rising pollution concerns.
CJI Gavai said a pollution policy cannot be limited to Delhi, calling for a pan-India approach. The Court will hear the firecracker ban matter again on September 22.
