The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sought the Punjab DGP’s response on a PIL challenging official police Instagram videos that allegedly show injured arrestees. The matter is listed on November 26.
The Allahabad High Court has rejected the bail application of Head Constable Jaysheel Tiwari, charged by the CBI with murder and conspiracy in the custodial death of Krishna Yadav alias Pujari in Jaunpur, holding that his abscondence during investigation and trial and the gravity of custodial deaths left no ground for bail, while directing the trial court to expedite the trial.
Supreme Court judge Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has voiced concern over a rise in extra-judicial killings and custodial violence, questioning why accused persons are taken out at 3 am for crime-scene reconstruction and whether ‘shortcut methods’ are used to cover gaps in investigation. Speaking at a New Delhi event, he said the constitutional system does not approve of such situations, and expressed unease at young IPS officers personally assaulting demonstrators.
