The Tamil Nadu government has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court’s order imposing a statewide ban on cow and calf slaughter. The State questioned directions issued to authorities while hearing a PIL seeking regulation of slaughter at authorised places under law.
The Allahabad High Court observed that the State should adopt the doctrine of “superior responsibility,” holding senior bureaucrats accountable, and in appropriate cases criminally liable, for failing to prevent or punish misconduct by subordinates, stressing stronger administrative accountability and governance reforms.
The Allahabad High Court expressed concern over bail being granted in rape and murder cases due to shortcomings in Uttar Pradesh’s forensic infrastructure, urging the State to modernize FSL facilities with advanced equipment and adequate staff. The Court directed that its order be placed before Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The Calcutta High Court dismissed a PIL that challenged the Election Commission of India’s orders transferring police officers and bureaucrats in West Bengal. The Court said such pre-election administrative decisions fall within the poll body’s authority.
The Supreme Court refused to excuse Bihar’s Chief Secretary from appearing in the stray dogs case, despite upcoming state elections. The bench said, “There is Election Commission which would take care. Don’t worry. Let the chief secretary come.”
CJI B R Gavai stressed that Article 14 envisions unequal treatment for unequals, highlighting the need for creamy layer principle within SC/ST reservations. He said children of top officials cannot be equated with those from marginalized labour backgrounds.
Uttarakhand High Court raised the question after an ADM replied in Hindi during a PIL hearing. The bench asked, “whether an officer of ADM level, who has no knowledge of English, can effectively control an executive position.”
