The Supreme Court of India has sought responses from the Bar Council of India and Bar Council of Telangana on a plea challenging a 2023 rule disqualifying advocates with multiple pending serious criminal cases from contesting Bar Council elections. The petitioner argues that disqualification based on mere pendency of cases violates the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence.
Today, On 27th January, The Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking SC/ST reservation in Bar Councils, saying petitioners must approach authorities first. “Just because Court did something for women, you come! You just want it on a platter!” Bench remarked.
The Supreme Court has rebuked the Bar Council of India (BCI) for refusing travel allowances and honorarium to retired judges supervising Bar Council elections, questioning how they are expected to cover expenses personally and warning against non-compliance with court directives.
The Supreme Court allowed intervention in the Bar Council elections matter but strictly directed parties to remain physically present. Warning lawyers appearing online, the CJI said, “Those who are appearing online, they will have to donate.”
Today, On 5th January, The Supreme Court has reduced the State Bar Council election nomination fee for specially abled advocates from Rs.1.25 lakh to Rs.15,000. The Court also directed the Bar Council of India to amend rules for future inclusive elections.

The Court emphasized the independence of bar associations and allowed individuals to hold office despite political ideologies, highlighting the need for balancing responsibilities and beliefs.
The Supreme Court on Monday(18th Nov) criticized the Delhi High Court Bar Association’s handling of women’s reservation petitions, urging a 33% quota. Despite prior recommendations for women’s positions, recent resolutions were rejected amid vocal opposition from a male-dominated meeting. The Court plans to address the issue further on November 29, amid ongoing litigation.
