The Supreme Court of India will hear a plea challenging an FIR against the High-Powered Election Supervisory Committee overseeing state bar council elections, after Manan Kumar Mishra informed a bench led by Surya Kant.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea that challenges the registration of an FIR against the ‘High-Powered Election Supervisory Committee,’ established to oversee state bar council elections.

A bench consisting of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was informed on Monday by senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, who chairs the Bar Council of India, that a lawyer has filed an FIR against the committee.

Mishra stated,

“This is very urgent. An FIR has been lodged against the high powered committee overseeing the bar council elections by a lawyer. This is serious. It’s just because his appeal was not considered. This is with regard to Maharashtra and Goa state bar council elections.”

The Chief Justice responded,

“We will list it on Tuesday.”

The Supreme Court had created the committee, led by former apex court judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, which also includes Justice Ravi Shankar Jha (former chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court) and senior advocate V Giri.

On February 18, the Supreme Court directed its registry not to list any petitions related to state bar council elections, advising aggrieved parties to bring their grievances before the apex court-appointed committee.

To ensure the elections are conducted in a timely, transparent, and fair manner, the Supreme Court had previously ordered that all state bar council elections across India be supervised by retired high court judges, with a final deadline set for January 31, 2026.
