Today, On 25th November, The Supreme Court remarked that it had no details at this stage in the urgent West Bengal SIR matter. Chief Justice Surya Kant asked the counsel to file the application and assured that the Court would examine it.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday briefly heard an urgent mention relating to the West Bengal SIR process.
During the short hearing, counsel informed the Bench that the situation required immediate attention because the SIR process in the State was already underway.
Counsel also told the Court that a citizenship application was still pending even though the State authorities had moved forward with the SIR steps.
While explaining the urgency, counsel added that,
“December 4th being the final day for enumeration.”
After hearing the mention, the Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant responded that the Bench did not yet have the necessary documents or information to examine the matter.
The CJI said,
“The Court has no details at this stage”
The Court also directed counsel to place the facts properly before the Court by filing the required application.
The CJI then assured,
“It will be looked into.”
The matter is expected to come back before the Supreme Court once the application is filed, especially since the enumeration deadline is approaching. The counsel’s concern centred on the possibility that the pending citizenship application could be affected if the SIR process concludes before the Court intervenes.
