New Delhi: Today (Jul 10th): The Supreme Court postponed until July 12 the hearing on the bail plea of former Tamil Nadu minister V Senthil Balaji, who was arrested last year by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested the adjournment, and the bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih agreed, scheduling the matter for the day after tomorrow at the end of the list.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Balaji, noted that there have been multiple adjournments by the ED in the case. Earlier, on April 1, the Supreme Court had sought a response from the ED on Balaji’s bail plea, issuing notice to the agency.

The Madras High Court had previously denied Balaji’s bail petition on February 28, citing concerns that granting bail in such a case could send the wrong signal and go against public interest. The court recommended expediting the trial process and conducting it on a day-to-day basis as per Supreme Court guidelines.

Balaji was arrested on June 14 last year in connection with a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-jobs scam during his tenure as transport minister in the AIADMK government. The ED filed a 3,000-page charge sheet against him on August 12 last year, and his earlier bail pleas were dismissed by both the high court and a local court on October 19.

The money laundering case against Balaji and his bail plea have faced multiple rejections in lower courts.
