The Supreme Court has stayed proceedings against Tamil Nadu Minister I Periyasamy and his family in a Rs 2.1 crore disproportionate assets case. The top court also issued a notice, pausing the trial ordered by the Madras High Court.

New Delhi: On August 20, the Supreme Court of India temporarily stayed the legal proceedings against DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister I Periyasamy and his family members in a case involving alleged disproportionate assets worth Rs 2.1 crore. The top court also issued a notice in the matter on August 19.

“There shall be stay of proceedings in..pending before the Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Special Judge for Prevention of Corruption Act Cases, Dindigul,”

the bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A G Masih stated in its order.

This order was passed on Periyasamy’s appeal challenging the Madras High Court verdict of April 28, which had directed the special court to frame charges against him and his family members.

The high court had issued this direction following pleas filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), which had challenged an earlier order that discharged Periyasamy and his family members from the case.

The Madras High Court had rejected the discharge order and instructed the special court to conduct a day-to-day trial and complete it within six months.

Periyasamy, who currently holds the rural development, panchayats, and panchayat union portfolios in the DMK government, is alleged to have accumulated wealth totaling Rs 2.1 crore in his name as well as in the names of his wife, P Suseela, and his sons, P Sentilkumar and P Prabhu.

The DVAC claims that this wealth is disproportionate to his known sources of income during his tenure as a minister between 2006 and 2010.

The DVAC had initially challenged the discharge of Periyasamy and his family members and filed appeals before the high court in 2018.

The Supreme Court’s latest order now pauses the trial proceedings until further directions, providing temporary relief to the DMK leader and his family.
