The Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on the Sangita Kalanidhi award given to Carnatic musician TM Krishna, pending a petition by V Srinivasan, who accuses Krishna of damaging MS Subbulakshmi’s image. This controversy emphasizes the tension between artistic expression and the safeguarding of cultural legacies.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has placed an interim stay on the Sangita Kalanidhi MS Subbulakshmi award conferred on renowned Carnatic musician TM Krishna. The court directed that Krishna “not be recognised as its recipient” until a petition filed by V Srinivasan, the grandson of the legendary MS Subbulakshmi, is fully adjudicated.
The petition alleges that TM Krishna had maligned Subbulakshmi’s image through articles published in mainstream media. Addressing the matter, a bench comprising Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice SVN Bhatti issued a notice to other defendants.
“The court is mindful of the respect and honour that M S Subbulakshmi commands all across music lovers spreading across all spectrums. She is one of the most distinguished singers and although she passed away in December, 2004, her melodious voice continues to bring great joy to her fans,”
said the bench.

This prestigious award, named after one of India’s most iconic musicians, has always carried immense cultural significance. However, the controversy surrounding its 2023 recipient has sparked intense debate in the music community.
The Supreme Court’s directive underscores the importance of ensuring that such honors remain untarnished by allegations or disputes. With the legal proceedings underway, the focus now shifts to resolving the case and upholding the legacy of MS Subbulakshmi.
This interim stay on TM Krishna’s recognition serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between artistic expression and preserving the sanctity of revered cultural figures.
