As per the official notification, the benches and judges have been allocated on a weekly basis to ensure the smooth functioning of the top court.
New Delhi, May 16 – The Supreme Court of India has released an official notification regarding its functioning during the upcoming summer break.
The summer vacation, which usually sees a near-complete shutdown of court operations, has now been renamed as “partial court working days” and will stretch from May 26 to July 13.

In a recent change from earlier years, there will now be two to five vacation benches of the apex court hearing cases during this period. What’s more, even senior judges including the Chief Justice of India, Justice B R Gavai, will be sitting in court and hearing matters.
This is a major shift from the “earlier practice“, where “there used to be only two vacation benches during the summer vacation, and senior judges were not supposed to hold courts.”

Weekly Schedule and Bench Allocation
As per the official notification, the benches and judges have been allocated on a weekly basis to ensure the smooth functioning of the top court.
During the first week — from May 26 to June 1 — five benches will function.
May 26 to June 1 (Total 5 Benches)

- Justices Vikram Nath and Sanjay Kumar

June 2 to June 8 (Total 3 Benches)

This detailed weekly allocation ensures that urgent and important cases can be heard even during the vacation, providing much-needed relief and continuity to litigants and advocates.

The notification also mentions the working hours of the court’s administrative wing. During the partial court working days, the Supreme Court Registry will remain open from 10 am to 5 pm for all officers and staff members.
However, the Registry “will be closed on all Saturdays (except July 12), Sundays, and public holidays.”
