“The Collegium has also taken into consideration the fact that, at present, the Bench of the Supreme Court is represented by only one Judge from the High Court at Calcutta. Mr. Justice Joymalya Bagchi stands at Sl. No. 11 in the combined all-India seniority of High Court Judges, including Chief Justices,”
the Collegium resolution stated.
Currently, Justice Joymalya Bagchi is serving as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court. While recommending him, the Collegium considered various factors such as merit, integrity, and competence. The recommendation also takes into account the fact that there is presently only one judge from the Calcutta High Court in the Supreme Court.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi was first appointed as a Judge of the Calcutta High Court on 27th June 2011. Later, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 4th January 2021. However, he returned to the Calcutta High Court on 8th November 2021, where he has been serving since.

Future Chief Justice of India?
An interesting revelation from the Collegium’s statement is that:
“After the retirement of Mr. Justice Altamas Kabir on 18th July 2013 as Chief Justice of India, there has not been any Chief Justice of India from the High Court at Calcutta.”
This means that no judge from the Calcutta High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of India for over a decade.
