During a routine hearing, the junior advocate requested an adjournment, stating that his senior was occupied with a case in the High Court.
What followed was a candid and slightly humorous response from Justice Sanjay Kumar, giving a subtle warning about courtroom etiquette—especially in the apex court.
Justice Sanjay Kumar remarked:
“You must not be so honest. Learn that in future, you should never say in the Supreme Court that your senior is busy in High Court…”
The judge made it clear that, even though the statement might be true, saying such a thing directly in the Supreme Court might not go down well with the bench.
In a reflective and witty tone, he continued, offering a piece of advice that has now sparked much discussion across legal circles and social media.
He added:
“Our egos are very fragile.”
This short but strong statement hinted at the unspoken courtroom protocols where judges, particularly those in the Supreme Court, might not appreciate being told that another court’s matter has taken priority over theirs.
Justice Kumar further explained the risk involved in being “too honest” in such situations, saying:
“You don’t want to offend the ego of the judge. Your case will go out. Directly. Not on merits.”
The comment served as a subtle warning that being too blunt about such reasons could lead to the case being dismissed—not due to its legal merit, but simply due to poor presentation or bruised egos.
